The Martins came from Rode in Somerset, where Thomas Martin was born in 1811 and Henry was born in 1817. They are listed in directories and in the census records as millwrights, engineers and fitters and appear to have fitted out entire factory buildings.
Greenland Middle Mill where, as millwrights, the Martins supplied six pairs of fulling stocks -machines for cleaning and felting woollen cloth- in 1855
Their premises were in Bridge Street, where Thomas Martin & Sons were listed in 1842.

The cast iron stanchions (pillars) of one of the buildings at Greenland Upper Mill each bore the name of Henry Martin, but none survived demolition
Similarly, the posts surrounding Ham Green in Holt and others by the road from Forewoods Common to Staverton Bridge have Henry Martin’s name plate. They have listed buildings status.
