Cycling Touring Club signThe Cyclists’ Touring Club sign came from the outside wall of the former New Bear Hotel in Silver Street, Bradford. In the late 19th century cycling opened up a new world of travelling for people who could not afford the huge cost of keeping a horse and carriage. The club was founded in 1878 and introduced these big cast iron signs on cycle-friendly inns and hotels from 1884. One is still to be seen in situ next to the Castle Inn. The club, now called CTC, is still going today.

The Pinckney Cup.

The Pinckney Cup was presented to the former County Technical School (later Fitzmaurice Grammar School) in 1927 by Captain Erlysman Charles Pinckney, a Justice of the Peace and captain of local volunteer soldiers. It was awarded for boys’ athletics at the school’s annual sports day. It is one of several trophies from the school that are now in the Museum.

Bradford Baths medallion.

The lead medallion was issued in 1897 when Bradford’s Memorial Baths were opened. The complex included a swimming bath and lasted until the early 1960s; new swimming baths were built a decade later.

Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have done very well, with 1 – 1 draws at home as the best results. The card has the name of George Andrews, who was not himself a junior at the time, but his son would have been.
