New Acquisitions: Stonemason Tools

Stone plays a large part in forming the character of the area around Bradford on Avon.

The work of stone quarriers, stonemasons and builders in stone has been an important aspect here for centuries, especially since the development of large underground freestone quarries.

Bradford on Avon Museum has been aiming to build up a representative collection of tools associated with the industry. A gap in the collection has now been filled, at last, by the gift of some of the large saws that were used to cut stone in the underground quarries and for slicing ashlar blocks. The largest of these, with a blade five feet long and a foot in width, goes under the name of a “frigbob”; a narrower one, just as long, was known as a “razzer”.

We dream that, one day when we a have a larger museum, there will be space to recreate a stonemason’s workshop, or maybe even a quarry!
