Talk: Alex Moulton, Engineer – His achievements and legacy
Thursday 11th June, 7:30pm, United Church
The speaker for the third talk in our 2026 programme, is Dan Farrell. Dan has written on the Bradford rubber industry, and is at the heart of the continuing Moulton story as Technical Lead at the Moulton Bicycle Company, industrial designer and chartered engineer.
Alex Moulton was born into the family that had brought the rubber industry to Bradford on Avon in 1850. They restored the Jacobean mansion, The Hall, as their home, above the riverside industrial site. Moulton joined the company after the war and over more than fifty years was one of the most innovative engineers in Britain. He is known particularly for his work on rubber suspension culminating in the suspension for the Mini. In 1962 his small-wheeled Moulton bicycle, also with rubber suspension, changed the form of the bicycle. He was a memorable character, a force in the town right up to his death in 2012. His friendships ranged across the worlds of science, engineering and the arts. Many famous people visited him at The Hall, his family, friends and employees commemorated in the wall-painting added to the dining room in the house in 1970.
