New Booklet: The 1841 Map

Booklet: Tithe Map of Bradford on Avon 1841

In the late 1830s the Bristol surveyor George Culley Ashmead (1801-1895) was commissioned to survey the parish of Bradford (then including Atworth, Holt, Limpley Stoke, South Wraxall and Winsley too) which was published in 1841. The survey was for the Tithe Apportionment, to determine who was liable to pay tithes (a tax) to the church.  The tithes were to be commuted from goods into a money payment.

The latest addition to the Museum’s list of publications is a most welcome reproduction of the data from the survey on ownership, occupation and area of properties in the town. Included are copies of the town section of the map, reproduced at a size that allows the property numbers to be read more easily than the map in Gee Langdon’s Year of the map book of 1976.

The booklet is in a larger format than usual, at A4, and is available from Museum Trustees Val Holden (01225 869159) and Chris Dale (07791 589801) and Ex Libris Bookshop, price £5.00
