Old Photographs: Hunting

.

These three photographs were taken by the chemist Richard Christopher from the upper floor of the building that is now the Dandy Lion public house. They show a meeting of a hunt outside the Town Hall, at the junction of Market Street and Church Street. Some of the population has turned out to see the Duke of Beaufort.

The date is not known, but is probably in the period immediately before the First World War in 1914, certainly after 1911 because the Town Hall is advertised for sale after the Urban District Council moved to Westbury House and Rural District Council to Abbey House. The original photographs are stereo-pairs and Richard Christopher would have taken them on his large Goertz camera, which is displayed in the Museum.
